Rediscovering the Web

28th January 2026 Sample Image

It all started with wanting to post my opinion online. Of course, like many, for me these days in 2026, the default goto is Facebook. But then i got thinking, why? We as a society are already way too over-reliant on this site in the first place, secondly, it is a gatekept site, meaning, unless you follow Facebook's particular rules and guidelines - you may end up having your post-removed, placed temporarily into Facebook jail or worse still, have your account banned altogether. Sure, it's easy enough to set up a new profile - but all those years of posts, photographs, contacts you have made - are all gone, and unless you can remember every single detail - it is gone forever and you have to start from scratch... all over again. Unfortunately, again, like a lot of people, I found myself having to do this several years ago when some imbecile of Nigerian heritage whom I have never even met decided to hack my Facebook profile and hijack it, making themselves the profile picture, and locking me out. The familiar tale followed - reaching out to automated bots at Meta (Facebook) and having no success whatsoever, being met with unhelpful automated responses and stock answers on ways I can secure my account - little use after that horse had already bolted.

Then i thought - perhaps my friends don't want to see me rambling for ages about something - I mean, Facebook started out as a way of just contacting each other, sharing photos, and occasionally funny videos - and it has snowballed into a giant platform where news, politics, music, art, banter, arguments, trolling all play out in real time - a blog would be a much better format for this right? So I then recalled that I had set up a blog some years ago - and I still had the link. I decided to log in and see if I could update it for the first time since May 2020 - but low and behold - despite me being able to log in, I was not able to update it for some reason, and no longer had access to it. With zero patience of going through the automated bot hell of trying to reach a resolution, I decided to draw a line under it and start afresh - but this time I thought, I won't just have a blog, I'll have a whole website - a site where I can link up some personal stuff, a blog, some photos, links to my music, games, computing and other interests - free of the chains of Facebook and all the hassle it brings. If people want my thoughts well they know now where they can find me - and I have more freedom to post what I want, when I want, without automated algorithms, bots, trolls and all sorts of madness making it hell. It's just like the old days - before social media - when those of a certain age will remember that people used to actually have their own full websites - I have fond memories of the early 2000s when myself and many of my friends had Freewebs accounts (R.I.P.) then before that of course there was Geocities... and to my delight, there is now Neocities, a homage to the old school days of the web when people had more freedom and less restraint - there was no social media sandbox, we could, within reason, do whatever we wanted. We weren't limited to a number of characters, we weren't beholden to an algorithm that proritised sponsored corporate content over updates from our friends, we were in control and I think in the absence of any real competition to Facebook, we need to get back to that.
